STEPS FOR APPLYING FOR THE PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP THROUGH THE SEPHARDIC LAW

  • First of all, in order to be sure that you are eligible to apply for the Citizenship according to the law, you have to write to the Jewish Communities in Portugal. There´s one in Lisbon and another one in Oporto (see details below). They will tell you the documents that you need in order for them to issue a Certificate. This certificate is one of the required documents in order to apply for the Citizenship.

  • After you receive the Certificate from the Jewish Community in Portugal (if you got your approval), you should order your CRIMINAL RECORD CERTIFICATE from the police and get your BIRTH CERTIFICATE and take both documents to Apostil in Jerusalem (Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Misrad Hahutz).

*Note that if you have another citizenship or lived outside Israel, you should request the Criminal Records and Birth Certificates of all the countries you’ve lived in, and legalize them at the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate of the country where it was issued; as well as all your passports.

  • Next step is to prepare the documents to be sent. The following documents are required:

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR PORTUGUESE CITIZENSHIP THROUGH SEPHARDIC LAW

  1. Birth Certificate from every country of citizenship (original document)

-180 days validity from the issuing date

-With Apostille Stamp

-Translated to Portuguese. This can be either done by an Israeli Notary or a Portuguese Notary. If it is done by an Israeli Notary, the translation will need to be certified by the Portuguese Embassy afterwards.

*Note that the Portuguese Embassy in Israel can only certify documents issued, apostilled and translated in Israel. Foreign documents must be certified in the country where they were issued and legalized by the Portuguese Consulate/Embassy in that country.

*According to the recent changes to the Law a translation is no longer mandatory if the document are written in English, French or Spanish.

  1. Criminal Record Certificate of every country of citizenship and residence

- 90 days validity from the issuing date

-With Apostile Stamp;

-Translated to Portuguese. This can be either done by an Israeli Notary or a Portuguese Notary. If it is done by an Israeli Notary, the translation will need to be certified by the Portuguese Embassy afterwards.

* Note that foreign documents must be certified in the country where they were issued and Legalized by the Portuguese Consulate/Embassy in that same country.

*According to the recent changes to the Law a translation is no longer requested if the document is written in English, French or Spanish.

  1. Certificate issued by a Jewish Community in Portugal (Lisbon or Oporto)

 

  1. Authenticated Copy of the Passport (All the pages)

This is done by the Portuguese Embassy in Israel or by the Portuguese Embassy in which country the person lives.

  1. Application Form filled in Portuguese + A Signature Recognition by the Portuguese Embassy.

  1. Summary of Entrances/Departures that appear stamped in the Passport.

 

Notice: If you plan to travel to Portugal and present the request by yourself you do not need the step d) and e).

COST OF THE SERVICES AT THE PORTUGUESE EMBASSY

Signature Recognition For this service in particular, the applicant needs to be physically present, in order to sign – costs 62,00 NIS;

Authentication of Passport (make sure the passport is signed before you copy it) - costs 277,00 NIS when is the 32 pages, and 459,00 NIS when it is the 64 pages one.

Certification of Translation of Criminal Record and Birth Certificate (after Apostile Stamp) - Cost: 123,00 or 143,00 NIS per document. (Depends if it is written in English or in Hebrew)*

*According to the recent changes to the Law a translation is no longer needed if the document is written is English, French or Spanish.

***These services can be paid only in Cash. Please bring the exact amount. ***

  1. FINAL STEP:

The final step of the application is paying the application fee and sending the process

to the Conservatória dos Registros Centrais, in Lisbon:

The payment can only be done by credit card through the website of the Conservatória: https://crcpagamentos.irn.mj.pt/pagvisamc.aspx?productid=NAC6.7

They will then give you a KABALA, which you need to attach to your documents. Please make sure to write the applicants name with a pen, on the Kabala.

Note that the Portuguese Embassy in Israel does not have any access or ways to know the progress of the citizenship application.

  1. WHAT TO DO AFTER YOU GET YOU CITIZENSHIP:

Send an e-mail to sconsular.telavive@mne.pt requesting an appointment in order to issue your identity card (Cartão do Cidadão).
